For fall protection using a half mast belay, pear-shaped carabiners with a larger opening and a wider head end have proven to be particularly practical. The frequent paying out and taking in of the rope is easily manageable with an HMS carabiner due to the widened head end. HMS carabiners provide enough space for attaching belay devices.
