Ascent Ropes are semi-static climbing ropes according to EN 1891 Type A, in the industrial sector the most common diameters are 10.5mm and 11mm. The usage elongation of approx. 3-6 % with these ropes allows an easy ascent, the less elongation the rope has, the easier the ascent.
Ropes with almost no elongation such as those made from Dyneema fibres are not yet approved for use in the PSA. The ascent ropes are made of polyamide fibres and are manufactured as a core-sheath construction in all imaginable colour variants.
The ratio of core to sheath component varies depending on the manufacturer, rope diameter and structure from 52% to 48% up to 57% to 43%. The load-bearing core of the rope is protected by the rope's sheath and includes among other things a tracer thread on which the relevant data of the rope can be found.
In the field of tree care, the ratio of core to sheath shifts towards a higher sheath component, whereby the rope diameter usually also becomes larger and ranges up to 11.7mm. The rope construction allows for splicing of end connections, this is helpful for rope installation from below and pulling off the rope after work.
Damaging influences are dirt, chemicals, solvent-containing varnishes, UV radiation and temperature exposure. Ropes made of synthetic fibres are optimised for the temperature ranges from 10°C to 40°C, lower or higher temperatures can affect the load-bearing capacity and service life of the rope. Contaminants can be washed out in cold water, cleaning in washing machines should definitely be avoided due to the surfactants, these have long-term damaging effects on the rope.
Storage should take place in cool, well-ventilated areas protected from UV radiation so that the ropes can dry off well if necessary.
A shrinkage of the rope by up to 5% in length is normal due to the materials used. Many manufacturers recommend pre-wetting the rope before the first use to achieve the shrinkage in length before application.
All ropes in the commercial sector must be checked at least once a year or if necessary by a competent person.
