Fall arrest devices are divided into devices on movable guidance (EN353-2) and on fixed guidance (EN 353-1).
Fixed guidance refers to vertical rail systems that are attached to ladder safety systems without a back protection basket and secure the ascent and descent by means of a suitable slider or glider. Movable guidance refers to ropes on which the moving fall arrest device is attached.
The rope is attached to an anchor point with a carabiner, and the fall arrest device is attached to the harness's fall arrest eyelet. In vertical use, the fall arrest device follows the user up or down and automatically locks in the event of a fall. In horizontal use of a safety rope, the fall arrest device can be used as a restraint system by previously setting the maximum rope length and thus preventing reaching the fall hazard area.
The fall arrest devices, including flexible guidance, are often used in temporary applications, such as for walking on roofs, manhole ladders, or in the construction industry. Fall arrest devices that are to be used as redundant safety in the field of rope access technology must meet the EN 12841 type A standard. It is essential to pay attention to the manufacturer's specifications regarding the permissible rope diameter, rope type and possibly also the rope manufacturer and the approved connection elements (carabiners). A combination of both standards is common among many manufacturers.
The use of a permanently installed fall-damping connector is always intended for fall protection systems, while for fall arrest systems in the field of rope access technology, some devices can also be used without an additional fall-damping connector.
All fall arrest devices must be checked at least once a year by a certified expert.
