This makes semi-circular carabiners fill a niche within the application spectrum. Since carabiners in the usual forms (pear-shaped, D-shaped, oval) have direction-dependent different breaking strengths, they are unsuitable for such uses where significant forces will act on the carabiner in both longitudinal and transverse directions.
